Suggest Remedy For Dizziness And Nausea After Lumbar Fusion Surgery

My 18 year old son had a 5 level lumbar fusion 1 week ago at Children s Hospital in Boston for scoliosis. While he tolerated the procedure well his post op therapy has been badly slowed by severe bouts with dizziness and nausea when getting out of bed, rendering any efforts at PT moot. He is getting very discouraged that something else is wrong. He today underwent an MRI which revealed no fluid leaks to the brain. All his vitals and blood work appear normal. Could this simply be the result of his spine and body trying to correct itself in a short period of time after having been so malalligned for so long? A neuro consult has been ordered for tomorrow and he has been off all post op narcotics for pain for nearly 3 days, just getting by on Tylenol and Motrin.

Hello,

Dizziness post surgery of lumbar fusion is not normal part of homeostasis where body tries to settle down with long term malalignment. There sounds some sort of discrepancy among the cerebral circulation of course which will lead to dizziness condition. An MRI of the brain is best first vital step to guide you in this case ahead.
