i am getting married tomorrow...just found out i am pregnant yesterday. have beenperscribed xanax for past 3 yrs. I am dying right now from a pani attack and stress from the wedding tomorrow..is it safe to take? just to get me through the night? and maybe one tomorrow?
Xanax, and the class of drugs it belongs to, are generally not recommended to take during pregnancy because there is some evidence that it can cause birth defects, and it is most harmful during the first trimester.
There are other anti-anxiety medications that are safe to use during pregnancy- and you should discuss your pregnancy with your mental health provider and/or the doctor who will care for your pregnancy which medication is best for you.
In the meantime, I know it is difficult, but you really should not take the Xanax.
I hope I was able to answer your question fully and that you are able to get an alternate medication from a doctor promptly.
Best wishes for the rest of the pregnancy,
Dr. Brown
