Suggest Remedy For Extreme Variations In Blood Sugar Levels While Having Type 1 Diabetes
My BF is a type 1 diabetic. His BS is on a constant roller coaster. Three nights ago after dinner if wAs High and his meter reads to 600 he took 20u of Novlin 70/30 checked it again an hour later and only 425 so he took 15 more units. He feel asleep after this at approximately 9. At 4am I awoke to check on him and he was almost unconscious his BS was 28! This sAme "rollercoaster" had happened the past two nights just with different levels all extremely high and then extremely low. Please help
It would be helpful for your boyfriend to learn carbohydrate counting ( how many carbohydrates are in his meals). This is easily done, he can do this through online lists on the ADA site or others or enlist the help of a nutritionist.
That way he would know how much insulin is needed per meal. In addition he needs to be taught his correction factor. This is how much insulin he needs to correct high blood sugars. This can be worked out with his doctor.
He may need to go on different types of insulins to help with blood sugar control. A baseline insulin along with regular fast acting insulin with meals.
