Suggest Remedy For Hypoglycemia When On Victoza

I am taking Victoza. Dr said it would help with food cravings. Started at .6 mg and progressed over a few weeks to 1.8. Everything was going fine until I became ravenous and then developed symptoms of hypoglycemia. My blood sugar was affecting my everyday life and activities. My dose has been reduced to 1.2 but I was still not feeling like myself and so I reduced it to .6 yesterday. It s getting better but it is causing me concern with everything I eat. I can t help but think this is how diabetics have to live but on the other end of the spectrum with watching their blood suger and taking insulin. Where my Dr. thought it would be helpful (I am obese) this is now ruling my life. I think I want off but am unsure whether to stop cold turkey or slowly wean myself off. I just don t like living with the symptoms of hypoglycemia (the nervousness, anxiety, flutterings, confusion, fatigue, etc). I have been taking Victoza for 2 months and have lost 17#. I m unsure if the hypoglycemia will diminish at .6 dose. My Dr. wants to take the wait and see approach but hypoglycemia is not easy to live with and I wanted to check with another dr. It seems defeating if I have to eat more to combat the hyoglycemia when the whole point of Victoza, as I understand it, it is decrease your appetite. I have never had hypoglycemia before, used to fast for days on end without any problems (religious fasting) and now I carry a bottle of orange juice with me everywhere. Please let me know what s happening with my body. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hypoglycemia is a side effect of the drug you are taking. Please note that the medicines of diabetes are to be titrated with the sugar levels. You start with a low dose and gradually go up to control the sugar levels avoiding hypoglycemia. I recommend you to start at a very low dose gradually going up till your sugar levels are within normal limits.

If you experience hypoglycemia before sugar levels are regulated then you can stop at a lower dose and add another drug to control the leftover sugar regulation. You can take drugs which are known not to cause hypoglycemia along with low dose of Victoza under consultation with your treating doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
