Suggest Remedy For Infection At The Piercing Site On The Ear

My 18 y old daughter got her tragus pierced a week ago-no problems up to today?! It looks a bit swollen and she is in pain although keeping it to minimum complaint (as I asked her not to do this). Is it possible after a week to suddenly (overnight!) become infected? I've requested she see her Dr. But she doesn't want to loose piercing-so doesn't want to go! Can she be treated w/o removal?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query infection at the piercing site on the ear could be due to the fact that during piercing the instruments used are not clean enough or not sterilize which causes infection and leads to formation of pus and pain as well. Conditions should be highly septic and instrument should be adequately sharp otherwise there will be minor skin trauma which leads to infection. I would suggest you to take advil or tylenol for pain. You can apply fusidic acid cream or mupirocin cream locally to treat or avoid any infection and pus in the ear lobe. Clean it properly. Consult doctor for proper examination. Doctor may prescribe antibiotic course for 7-10 days. Don't remove the ring as it will cause closure of site. If bleeding occurs you can apply the pressure for 10 mins till the bleeding stops.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
