Suggest Remedy For Irregular Periods And Brown Vaginal Discharge

I am 24 years old and for the last few months I have had a brownish vaginal discharge. My periods are and always have been irregular since they started at age 14. They can be really heavy and can last for a month and longer sometimes. I can also go months without having one. I have been on the pill a few times to help with this, would it be safe to go on it again or should I ask for further investigations. I am guessing this isn't normal. I have also never had a smear test or pelvic exam before.
