Suggest Remedy For Itchy Feeling On The Neck And Coughing Fits

I am a 30 year old female. On Sunday night after I finished eating dinner, I started having a random coughing fit and ended up vomiting twice. I may or may not have inhaled some vomit because I was coughing. My throat has felt tight for the past couple days. I was diagnosed with vocal chord disfunction disorder 7 years ago and it comes up once in awhile, so I don t know if that is what this is. My neck feels itchy on and off and today the sides of my ribs towards my back and my back feel like someone has punched me repeatedly. They are sensitive to touch. I haven t been able to eat too much and I am pretty worn out. I have been breathing okay for the most part and have used some benedryl a couple of times in case it was an allergic reaction. I don t know at what point to go see a physician. My blood pressure a couple hours ago was 104 over 60 something.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Your detailed history indicates the following things:
- Since you have a known vocal cord dysfunction you should be really careful while swallowing anything
- Violent bout of cough can cause the internal muscle spasm and oedema and pain and the symptoms can persist for few days
- Same is true for muscles of back and ribs
- Inhalation of food particles during such an attack is possible but usually are expelled well
- Get an X-ray of chest
- CT scan if foreign body is suspected
- Clinical evaluation and examination by a doctor and a second opinion of an ENT surgeon, pulmonologist will help further for proper diagnosis and management

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
