Local abcesses need medical intervention. Without drainage, the antibiotic cannot reach all the germs. Also, we currently cannot predict what antibiotics are the best for skin infections due to a high likelihood of resistance. Cephalexin works only in the minority of skin infections. Levaquin or clindamycin or sulfa drug work on the majority, but have significant numbers of resistance to each. Draining by an untrained person is likely to spread the infection not fix it.
