Suggest Remedy For Pain In Ankle

I hit my ankle on the side of a hotel bed two weeks ago and it is starting to swell and is painful to touch. I am able to walk on it, run and jump when exercising without pain. The only thing my doctor told me was to ice it and take pain reliever. Should I wrap it, heat it, what could be the cause?
