2.5 yrs ago I slipped and broke my wrist,(distal radius tx?) the orthopedic stated that I needed to have a plate put in and if I did not I would most likely not have any range of motion for that wrist. So, I agreed to have the plate implanted. After 1-1/2 yrs the plate was still hurting me so the DR removed 2 of the screws....that helped, but afte another year I still have pain. Thus, as the DR has been saying for atleast a year, I should probably have the plate removed, I agreed as my tendons and nerves, etc were running over the plate at the corner where my thumb is. Now I have it out and Dr is now telling me that I have to be REALLY carefull that my wrist is really fragile. I asked if it was because of the holes left by the screws, he said yes. Then I asked if this was normal and he said..."well, not really normal" but it does happen. He had to drill around the screws to get them out as the bone had grown over them. This all came about yesterday when i went to have my stapels removed and have X-rays. When I came home from the hospital 12 days ago, the Dr never spoke with me, my written instructions were to rest for a day, then to resume light to normal activity thereafter. Obviously use ice, elevation, sling. Thus I did resume my normal activities, I have horses, but have not ridden, now he is telling me that I shouldn't be lifting, should be wearing a heavy duty wrist support and that he put bone chips in to help regrow bone. ALso that over the last couple of years, he mentioned that the plate was a "little" large........and now says about the most recent surgery, "there were just a couple of "little mistakes"........I gess I need to get more clarity about the mistakes!! He's always in a rush and really doesn't give you time to even think. What do you think? I am 62 and very active. Ann YYYY@YYYY
