Suggest Remedy For Painful Lump In Shin Bone

I knocked my shin bone afew months ago and was left a lump on the bone. After changing my exercise regime the lump becomes very sore, i think i just have shin splints and have begun to rest, ice and compress my calves and shins. What can i do to prevent these pains exercising and is the lump anything to worry about???
