My 91 year old grandfather suffers from constipation and or hard stools. I've been giving him warm prune juice and a tablespoon of castor oil every morning but I've heard both pros and cons regarding castor oil. What is my best bet? He also takes warfin for his INR blood levels
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have pain persistent constipation. Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons like anal fissure , bowel obstruction , colon cancer , rectocele , diabetes , overactive parathyroid gland , hypothyroidism and dehydration . There are other reasons also like improper diet and less fiber content in diet . I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination . Doctor will order blood test , stool test , physical examination and endoscopy . Doctor may prescribe laxatives , anti inflammatory , antacids and proton pump inhibitor because constipation can also occur ue to acidity . For now eat more fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water .
