Suggest Remedy For Problem In Periods

I am 38 and have always had an extremley irregular menstrual cycle. it is only getting worse. My last cycle started with no spotting, but a very large blood clot the size of a small plum. Throughout the cycle which lasted a week, there were several large clots along with pretty severe, sharp abdominal pain, and bleeding almost to the point of hemmorrage. My doctor wants to schedule me for a D & C as soon as possible, is this the best thing to do?
