Suggest Remedy For Prolonged Pain In Calf Post An Accident
I was in a car accident. I immediately had pain in my calf and was unable to walk. I was told to stay off it for a few days and then return to normal activities (track, dance, etc.) the pain continued and I was prescribed pain medicine and muscle relaxers. I have been taking those almost everyday for 9 months and my calf still hurts. My doctor says that it should be healed by now. I am a dedicated athlete. What are my options? I have tried physical therapy too, so is surgery the last option?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Persistence of pain in calf region despite taking pain killers and muscle relaxants for 9 months needs to be further investigated. The persistent pain suggests that there is some injury which is still not healed. Soft tissue injuries especially those of ligaments and tendons are very slow to heal and may be associated with pain long after the injury. If further investigations like MRI do not detect any obvious cause of pain, physiotherapy should be done regularly to get slow but sustained relief from pain. Long term pain killers and muscle relaxants can cause side effects.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
