Suggest Remedy For Recurring Knee Pain

I am a 24 yo male. I am 5 11 and 200 lbs. I want to know what would possibly medically explain my severe knee pain with its symptoms.I was in the military for 6 years. I just recently got out. I developed knee pain in the military over the last few years. But it has escalated. The knee doesnt appear necessarily swollen. I just have good days and bad days. They are pretty equal in frequency. Good days are a slight ache every so often. Bad days, i have pain so severe i cannot walk without limping excessively, like today. It is in my right leg. Hip ache accompanies the knee pain always and every so often, although i never know when its going to happen, my hip will get a shooting pain and my leg with give out and i ll collapse. Its becoming an issue to the point i cant perform my duties at work as a mechanic and the pain is getting progressivly worse. I just would like to know what some possible diags could be and if i could do anything about it. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are having recurrent knee pain and sometimes pain in the hip radiating to the knee. You are having difficulty in walking and at your work. Recurrent knee pain is indicative of tendinitis, bursitis, torn ligament, meniscus tear, damaged cartilage under knee cap, bakers cyst, etc. Other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms are gout, osteoarthritis, RA, sciatica, bone tumors, etc.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP/Orthopedics. Get required blood tests, investigations, imaging tests (X-ray, CT, MRI) done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected and its severity. You will be given conservative treatment, treatment by physical therapy or recommended surgery if required.

If overweight, lose weight and maintain healthy weight. Take pain relieving medicine, after food, one stat when needed to get relieve. You can use pain relieving ointments, sprays, warm compression, gentle massage for relieve. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
