General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Severe and prolonged bleeding occurs commonly due to hormonal imbalance. I would suggest you to take a pelvic ultrasound, thyroid test and complete blood count to detect any uterine or ovarian abnormalities. Severe bleeding should be treated immediately to avoid anemia. You may require hormonal contraceptives to regulate your cycles.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
