Suggest Remedy For Severe Pain And Inability To Walk Post Spinal Fusion

I had spinal fusion from my lower neck to only leaving l3, L4, and l5 (18 years ago I had the surgery). Still working full time. I ve felt stiff like I can t bend. Extreme lower spinal and tailbone pain with sciatic. I bent forward at work and pulled something. It got progressively worse and now a week later I can t walk like I use to. I can t stand up fully straight without feeling bad pain in the lower back tailbone area. I am currently taking it easy with pain pills and having to walk with my butt kind of tucked in to avoid severe pain. It hurts less when I walk that way.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Vertebra is made of anterior vertebral body and posterior laminae with a space for spinal cord, the neural structure continued from brain for supplying the parts of the body. In between the vertebral bodies are the intervertebral discs which act as a support for the movement of the spine. Spinal fusion is the procedure where the vertebral bodies are fused to prevent any adverse effects of movement of the spine.

Cervical and lumber vertebral fusion is the common procedure done in the spine. The procedure is done to reduce pain developed during the movement of the spine and also accompanied with laminectomy, if there is nerve compression. The back pain symptoms along with sciatica indicates that there is compression of spinal nerves which may be due to disc prolapse or due to osteophyte growth. It should be evaluated with imaging studies such as X- ray spine, CT Scan or MRI scan. Depends on the cause, the management varies from physiotherapy to surgical intervention. Visit the orthopedist for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
