Suggest Remedy For Sharp Pain In Lower Back With Swollen Hard Spot

My husband has had sharp pains in lower back off and on for some time. Today it seems consistently worse and pain has also appeared in foot down to toes in the right foot. There is a bit of swelling over a hard spot to left of lower spine. He is having difficulty finding a way to sit or to lay down. It is also uncomfortable for him to walk although pain is not as severe standing up and slowly walking. I want him to go to the ER but he wants to wait. he took Tylenol Arthritis-2-at 6pm. What else can we do?
