Suggest Remedy For Stomach Cramps And Diarrhea While On Metformin

I take metformin for type 2 diabetes. I started taking one pill a day at dinnertime 6 months ago. For the first two weeks I had the diarrhea on and off. Then I seemed to get used to the pill with no complications. . However, last night I was out of town and forgot to take my pill at dinnertime so I took it at about 10:00 pm. At 1:00 am I was awakened with stomach pains(cramps), a pounding feeling throughout my body, heat in my hands, and bloody diarrhea stool. It is not as bad now but I still have blood coming out and mild cramps. Im a 67 year old female and I just returned home. I am going to see my primary care physician tomorrow if he ll see me. My questions are, Should I take this pill tonight with my dinner or wait until I see the doctor, and do you think metformin has anything to do with these symptoms?

Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to side effects of Metformin. I suggest using daily probiotics and OTC medications to treat the diarrhea such as Imodium. I also suggest to drink liquids. I recommend to continue using Metformin as prescribed by your doctor. If the symptoms continue, you should consult your doctor for an alternative treatment.
