Suggest Remedy For Swelling And Tenderness Of Knee With Prominent Vein

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...

I have a large verisous vain in my lower right leg. It has been swollen and tender in the bend of my knee for the last 4 days. For the passed 2 days I have what looks like a bruise around 3 inches around below the vain, on the top of my leg. It is very tender to the tough and somewhat swollen. How should I treat? I have been keeping it elevated.

Hi there,

Varicose veins can be really uncomfortable, and I see a lot of patients for this in my clinic. However, tenderness in the back of your leg is more concerning for a blood clot, and I'd recommend an ultrasound to diagnose this. If your ultrasound comes back negative (no clot), then your symptoms are likely due to your varicose veins. I'd recommend ibuprofen for the pain, which can also help with inflammation, and compression stockings, which can be bought over the counter at any pharmacy.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
