Suggest Remedy For Swelling In Knuckle Of Middle Finger

On my middle finger (right hand), the middle knuckle is quite swollen. It has been swollen for a number of years. I cannot recall jamming it years ago, but its definitely possible. It is now getting in the way of hobbies (playing music) because of lack of flexibility due to its size. What should I do first?
