Suggest Remedy For Swollen Ears

A few times a year my left ear becomes very hot and swollen in the cartilage. It looks somewhat like cauliflower ear that you see boxers get. It if usually painful and hot and lasts the entire day. Usually when I wake up the next morning it is much better. I am a 27 year-old female and have expeienced this for probably the last 5 years. Any idea what could cause this and what I can do to prevent it in the future?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your query.
Your symptoms suggest infection of the cartilage of the external ear called perichondritis of pinna leading to cauliflower ears.
It is treated with penicillin antibiotics + anti inflammatory medicines for 5 to 7 days.
Hot and humid climate, ear piercing, cartilage piercing, ear trauma etc can cause infection of the outter ear leading infection of the cartilage causing cauliflower ear.
Once the cartilage is damaged it cannot be rectified.
Prevention of infection of the cartilage is the only way out.
Avoid ear piercing, trauma to ears.
hope my answers have helped you. Thanks.
