Suggest Remedy To Heal Pain In Buttocks Due To Being Hit

My brother in law was hit by a baseball on his shin. He is 70 years old and in good health. The Dr at the ER was unable to stitch the woulnd. He knows how to care for the wound but no one ever told him what else to do to get quick healing. Should he be keeping his leg up or using heat? What can he do to help the wound heal?
