My husband is suffering from chronic alcoholism since last 7 years and now it appears that he is having alcohol psychosis. Over the lst 12 month he was sent to rehab thrice and hospitalsed twice. Since every time he drinks he behaves like an insane person we do not know how to handle his illnes. He is still employed as a very senior officer in a PSU, but we do know how safe his job is as he lacks motivation to come out of alcohol. He has failed to remain clean even for a single day each time he was brought back home. His prognos is very poor. please help.
For treatment of morbid alcoholism one main prerequisite thing is to have enough motivation to quit. Try to motivate him to quit. Once he becomes motivated then treatment is started. It consists of acute and maintenance phase.
In acute phase to replenish alcohol medicines like benzodiazepines are given. Commonly chlordiazepoxide or lorazepam are used. The doses are reduced gradually and in five days proper remission is achieved.
After acute phase maintainence treatment is given to patient. To prevent anxiety low dose benzodiazepines can be given on SOS. Some anti craving agents like acamprosate can be used for preventing long term anxiety.
