Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes I am trying very hard to come off clonzapam, I am now on 0.5mg 2 times a day taken it for 6 years at 2mg, 3times a day. started coming off it in July 2013 told through this time that my doc. was taking me off too fast, by aug,2014 I was on 0.5mg. one day the next day1/4. This continued for about 2 weeks when my dr. said since I was on such a low dose to come off cold turkey. Well that was the wrong decision I started having bad withdrawals but I just continued on for 3 more weeks when I couldn t take anymore and my dr. put me back on 0.5mg twice a day. I am now feeling much better now but I still want off this mean drug because now I am afraid all the old symptoms will come back. I need off it . Do you have any suggestions?
Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine and the drug cause significant dependence. Continued long term use result in dependence and this results withdrawal symptoms if the drug is stopped cold turkey. You are taking the drug in 0.5 mg two times a day currently and as per my opinion the tapering of these doses should run a long course. You have already tapered the significant doses of drug and not try to reduce the doses after every 4 weeks and then stop completely at about 8-12 weeks.
Use of drugs like Pregabalin or Gabapentin are associated with reduced anxiety and withdrawal symptoms are tolerated easily in such case. Visit your doctor again and discuss about these drugs.
Thanks.
