Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my husband is 53 y/o , last week he experienced some headache and his BP WAS 122/98, He restarted taking meds, hydrochlorothiazide (he was not taking regularly due to non discomfort, What else he should do to lower the diastolic nr, and what is the real risk of high diastolic BP?
Dear I can understand your concern but I would like to inform you that diastolic blood pressure indicates peripheral resistance in arteries . This has been observed that it increases with up to the age of 60 years and after that it starts falling . There are many studies for assessing the cardiovascular risks associated with isolated diastolic hypertension . And this has been concluded that it's an independent risk factor for cardiac morbidity and mortality . But it is not as dangerous as systolic blood pressure . In my opinion without making hurry get his blood pressure checked for 2 to 3 more occasions and analyse it.if it is found to be increased then discus about drug therapy with your physician . calcium channel blockers can better work in this..apart from this maintain healthy lifestyle that includes maintaining BMI less than 25 , daily 30 min brisk walk , salt and saturated fat restricted diet . Take diet rich in fruits and vegetables . Drink alcohol in moderation . All this will help in managing blood pressure . Hope this will help.
