Suggest Tests Needed To Diagnose Dimples At The Bottom Of Back

My child has two dimples at the bottom of her back, one shallow and one that looks deep, a mass, and an abnormal gluteal fold. The doctor says all she needs is an ultrasound, but a previous pediatrician had told me to expect an MRI. Should I insist on an MRI, or will the ultrasound be able to determine any problems?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Ultrasound examination is a good method of evaluating the gluteal region in children. A ultrasound scan done with high frequency probe will show any underlying problems and is best for your child. The MRI scan is required only if there is any suspicious problems when seen on ultrasound. If there are dimples in gluteal region then ultrasound will solve the problem but if there is suspected problems with the spinal cord then MRI gives a better picture. I will suggest that you get ultrasound done and if any developmental problem is present then consult a neurologist and then get MRI done if the neurologist recommends.
