Suggest Tests To Confirm Pregnancy

Hi I am 23, weigh 8 and three quarter stone, easily conceived my daughter who is now 2 and never had any problems with irregular periods. I have just come off the Depo injection, I should of gone for a shot on April 14th but chose not to have it in order to start trying for another baby. I have had unprotected sex for the last month now and wondered as I have not had and spotting or periods could I be pregnant?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

If you have been off Depo and you have been having unprotected sex, it is definitely possible that you could have conceived.

However, in some women, ovulation can take even a few months to resume after discontinuing long-acting contraceptives such as Depo-Provera, especially if you have been on it for a long time and you did not menstruate while on the shot.

The way to tell the difference is to perform an over-the-counter urine pregnancy test, as it should become positive within 2 weeks of conception.

If you are not menstruating and are not pregnant, it can sometimes take even 6 months for your period to come back again.

So I encourage you to be patient if you are not pregnant yet in your first month after discontinuing Depo-Provera. You can safely continue to try to conceive during this time, and checking a pregnancy test monthly if you do not menstruate is a good way to monitor your status.

I hope i was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
