Suggest Tests To Diagnose A Fractured Foot

Good Grief! What are you doing up this early, Dr. Rynne?! Tripped over a small stump yesterday evening while watering the plants (I am a Tennessee Master Gardener). As a retired RN, with several years in orthopedics, me thinks I have in the left foot (outer left...forgotten all my medical terms). Put some Voltaren Gel on it last p.m. and wrapped it in an ace bandage. No ice. Brrrr. I m a heat and humidity, very young, get in my 10,000 steps daily plus, and recently retired from dialysis nursing. As if that had anything to do with it! Ambulation is very uncomfortable but doable. Will give it a week, and get an x-ray.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Noted your history about twisting due to tripping over a stump while gardening, was a registered nurse working in a dialysis unit, put Voltaren gel.
Yes, X-ray should help the best to see or rule out fracture.
Also needed is clinical examination by an Orthopedic Surgeon to get a proper diagnosis as there are other conditions like stretched muscles, ligaments, collateral ligaments and so on.
Best is to put a crepe bandage in such a way to support the traumatized part of the foot.
Elevate the foot above heart level in laying down position.
Take an anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen if it suits you.
Take care and give feedback.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
