I ve suffered with bladder infections for the past 5 years and I have always been prescribed Trimethoprim but I m wanting to know if Amoxicillin would be a good choice? Thanks, Talitha

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Talitha,

Infection of bladder is called 'cystitis'.

The first-choice agents for treatment of uncomplicated acute cystitis in women is nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), or fosfomycin.

Hence, Sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim can be used, but Amoxicillin group is not indicated to be used as first choice.

Fluoroquinolones like norfloxaxin, ciprofloxcin, levofloxacin are reserved for complicated cystitis.

Drink plenty of water and keep yourself well hydrated. Consume more of citrus fruits and citrus fruit juices during this period.

Hope the information provided will help you.
