Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
This is a case study: 48 year old male, smoker, drinks alcohol, BP 148/98, cholesterol 220. Do I only treat the hypertension and attempt TLC or do I start on statins as well? If I were to only treat hypertension for now, what would be the safest drug?
Infectious Diseases Specialist, Dr. Praveen G's Response
Hello, Welcome to HCM As your age is 48 years,I would suggest you to take antihypertensive medication belonging to ACE group of drugs like Ramipril 2.5/5mg. If you develop dry cough from this medication you can go for AT-1 antagonists like Telmisartan-20/40mg. These drugs are very good for kidneys also(assuming you are not having any preexisting kidney diseases). Definitely you start taking Statins, that will help you to reduce the cholesterol levels and also decreases the future incidence of stroke and heart attacks.
