Suggest Treatment After Bitten By An Insect

Hello, I am currently in gili air (Lombok, Indonesia), and I was stung by what they call a blue Barbie while snorkling. As I got out some workers came over and helped treat me since I was in somenpain. One used some rock method to get the stinger out and then applied iodine to it and bandaged it. Then right after someone who said he deals with these strings before used a sewing needle I couldn t see in or near the sting to fetch it out but did not fully stick in it or have prolonged exposure, however my toe was slightly bleeding from the sight. He routinely added onion before and after the needle maneuver and as soon as I got back to my room I used alcohol swag and polysporin on this wound. I tried asking if the needle was sterile, if it had ever been used on anyone else but the language barrier may have led to some miscommunication and he assured me it was cleaned or not used but I don t know if he was trustworthy. Do I need to be worried about a possible Hep C or HIV infextion? I have all my routine vaccinations for the region including Hep b and tetanus. What should I do? Get tested look out for symptoms? Thanks for you help...PS I m not immunocompromised or have any ailments I know about. Arman

Hello,

As per your case history, you are suffering from insect bite dermatitis.

My treatment advice is:
1. Do not squeeze the lesions as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a mild antibiotic cream like Fusiderm cream twice daily on it.
3. Take an antihistamine medicine like Levocetirizine drug for 7 to 10 days.
4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics, and oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
