Suggest Treatment For Bell's Palsy

Yesterday I was diagnosed with Bell's palsy after being whisked to A&E by ambulance, having woken up unable to speak properly. The doctor started me on a course of Prednisolone immediately as it was within the 72 hour period during which this is effective. I will obviously be seeing my own GP this week but am wondering what are my chances of making a complete recovery bearing in mind that I am over 60, have high blood pressure and also diabetes, all of which I understand to be not helpful factors! Also, should I be 'taking it easy' to help the healing process or can I carry on as normal?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Bell's palsy causes idiopathic palsy of Facial Nerve. In most cases the palsy occurs without any definitive reasons. Presence of obesity, hypertension, diabetes increase the risk. You are advised to take Prednisolone and the drug would result in improvement. In most cases the recovery occurs in about 4 weeks while total recovery may take longer time. The dose of prednisolone should be progressively tapered to prevent any steroid withdrawal. Apart from this drugs like Pregabalin or Gabapentin also help in rapid recovery. Consult your doctor and ask about the prescription of these drugs. Don't be stressed because in most individuals with Bell's Palsy complete recovery occurs.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
