Suggest Treatment For EPL Rupture And Broken Wrist
Hi there. I broke my wrist in late Jan and did not realize until it mostly healed that I had also had a bursted EPL tendon. The doctors missed it, but my thumb wouldn t straighten and today it was confirmed. It is an extremely bad time for me to go to surgery, since I have a book deadline and summer plans. Would there be any concerning consequences if I put the surgery off until September? The doctor mentioned I might have joint problems, but if this is a minor not major issue, I might have to wait. What do you think?
You have a history of EPL tendon rupture and broken wrist. Presently you fail to straighten the thumb. You are suggested not to delay treatment. It will only cause further complications. You can post pone your other programs and get treated at the earliest. Delay may cause further damage to the thumb, don't make it a chronic problem. Recovery from surgery will take about 6-8 weeks.
After 6 weeks postoperatively the splint is commonly removed. It may take about 3 months postoperatively to be able to fully extend the interphalangeal joint of the thumb. You can plan and manage the postponement of your other programs accordingly. You are advised to give priority to your health needs first.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
