Suggest Treatment For GERD And Pain In The Chest Area

ey i suffer from GERD but havnt had any problems for a long time. I have recently started excersizing and have been drinking alot more water (the more water intake is causing heartburn aswell). While im running im getting a pain in my throat/chest and feel like i need to throw up. Is there anything i can eat or take before excersize to prevent this from happening?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

GERD is caused due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of the oesophagus.

Medical management consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole (which prevent acid formation in the stomach)+ Domperidone preparations (strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux).

In addition, you need to follow certain diet & lifestyle measures, such as:

1. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
2. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction (if overweight), sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
