General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the Respiratory syncitial virus infection may provoke variety of problems in an infant of 5 months ranging from

- low grade bronchitis,
- interstitial inflammation
- severe pneumonia
- acute respiratory distress syndrome as well depending upon the viral load and host immune response.

So following signs would be best to judge with recovery aspect of the child as obviously at this age, spitting and vomiting will only be the protective measures against coughing.

@ raised rate of respiration
@ fast, shallow breaths
@ central ( peri oral ) or peripheral ( limbs ) cyanosis, with bluish discoloration indicative of low oxygenation of tissues
@ high pulse rate on persistent basis
@ retraction of intercostal muscles indicative of use of extra efforts to breath
@ running temperature despite antibiotics
@ lethargy
@ poor feeding
@ low urine output

Treatment depends upon the clinical assessment and has to be co related with severity on chest x-ray and lab data.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
