Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had three clots. Two after a hysterectomy in both lungs then 2 years later in the leg(no surgery). I was placed on cumadin then xyrelto. I caught a UTI was given antibiotics then rushed to the er hemorrhaging. Stayed 3 days released told not to take any more thinners. Went to a hematologist was told I have a disorder could not make a decision if I need to take blood thinners. I was told later that the type of antibiotic that was given to me was not supposed to be mixed with the blood thinner that I was taking at the time. Feels like 50%50 chance either way...
Antibiotics usually are the first line treatment for urinary tract infections. Which drugs are prescribed and for how long depend on your health condition and the type of bacteria found in your urine.
Drugs commonly recommended for simple UTIs include:
Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim),Fluoroquinolones like Cirofoxacine,Levofloxacini or Nitrofurantoini. You didn't mention the name of your antibiotics but very probably your doctor recommend one of the drugs of the list that I write. The combination of Warfarin (Coumadin) plus Ciprofloxacin (Cipro),or Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) ,increase the effect of Warfarin, generally within 1 week after you start the treatment.
In my opinion,This is the reason of your hemorrhaging. In circumstances when the combination of Coumadin and Bactrim or a Fluoroquinolon mast be taken together ,it is very important to decreases the dose of Coumadin (the blood thinner) to avoid hemorrhagic episodes like in your case.
Hope I have answered your query.
