Suggest Treatment For UTIs In An Elderly Person

Hi,my 92 yr old grandfather has bouts of UTIs that sometimes become septic. When he arrived at hospital they had slowly infused him with 2 units of blood. They said it is at 8.4 now but they conclude that it will be lower tomorrow. He just wants to be comfortable. If it s at 8.4 now and he went jnto hospital on Monday so that was when the 2 units of blood was given. How many more units should be given to put him into a safe level to go home and be with his loved ones?

Hello,

Blood transfusion(packed red cells transfusion) is usually indicated if HB% is below 6 Gm% or PCV below 30%.

Haemoglobin level of 9 Gm% is safe and the patient should be fit for discharge.

Hematinics can be continued at home to increase Hemoglobin further. One unit of packed red cell transfusion (450 ml) usually raises the haemoglobin concentration by about 1G/dl in an average adult.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
