Hi, My niece has been diagnosed with klebsiella pneumoniae, she is 32 weeks pregnant with her 3rd child and is an insulin dependant diabetic, she has a UTI a severe cough and mastitis, and has been admitted to the local maternity unit so that they can treat the infection, I would like to know if her other 2 children need to be tested for klebsiella pneumoniae, as they also have severe coughs but also have colds?
Hi , I have gone through your question. Klebsiella pneumoniae can cause pneumonia in children, especially if they are admitted to a hospital( nosocomial infection). It is contagious and spreads by droplet infection. Since their mother is infected with this organism in the urinary tract, it can spread, although very rare. I would suggest you to get them checked for Klebsiella pneumoniae and get properly treated accordingly. Hope you found the answer helpful. Wishing you good health. Regards, Dr Deepti Verma
