Suggest Treatment For A Blocked Tear Duct

I just came back from the Optometrist and was told I have a blocked tear duct. They are referring me to another doctor to have it unblocked by opening the duct to drain by the nasal passage. Should I try a home treatment first, or isn t there any medication?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If the blockage is due to infection antibiotics should be prescribed.

For a narrowed punctum, the doctor can use a small probe to widen it.

They'll then flush or irrigate the tear duct with a saline solution.

This is an outpatient procedure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
