Hi,

An acromioclavicular joint separation, or AC tear, is a frequent injury seen among physically active people. In such injury, the clavicle (collar bone) separates from the scapula (shoulder blade).

Grade I or 1st-degree tear means that there is a slight displacement of the joint. The acromioclavicular ligament may be stretched or partially torn. Generally, most AC injuries don't require surgery.

The vast majority of patients will have a period of discomfort. Once this discomfort disappears, the shoulder usually becomes fully functional.

Application of ice packs is needed to reduce pain and swelling. Rest and a protective sling until the pain subsides for about 1-2 weeks.

Pain and anti-inflammatory medications need to be taken. By above measures, it usually takes about 2 weeks for a grade I injury or 1st-degree tear and 6 weeks for a grade II injury or 2nd-degree tear, to heal completely.

A rehabilitation program to restore normal motion and strength is begun as soon as the pain becomes tolerable with gentle exercises and progresses as healing allows.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
