Suggest Treatment For A Red, Sore, Bald Spot On Scalp

Hi. I have a quarter size, red, sore bald spot on my scalp that has been present for about four years. I ve been to a dermatologist and he gave me cortisone shots, which did nothing. I m thinking it may be a fungal or bacterial infection, but I don t know. What would last this long? Even without treatment?

Hello,

Red, sore, bald spot on the scalp is indicative of infection in the hair follicles causing hair fall leaving bald patches and red tender sore bald spots. Commonly it is caused by Tinea capitis. You are suggested to take a course oral anti-fungals like Fluconazole or Griseofulvin, if the infection is chronic you may have to take it for a longer time period. You can apply Clotrimazole or Miconazole cream or ointment for relieve. Maintain your hygiene, wash your bedding frequently.

Do not share your toiletries, keep your scalp clean & shampoo your hair regularly with selsun shampoo or any shampoo that contains selenium sulfide. Left untreated, hair loss can be permanent. Take food that helps hair growth like eggs, fatty fish, berries, nuts, seeds. Take food rich in iron and vitamin B12. You can take multivitamin capsules, once daily for 15-20 days.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
