Suggest Treatment For A Welt On The Chin After A Fall

My 2 year old fell while bathing and hit his mouth. It s below his bottom lip and above his chin. It swelled almost instantly and has a welt on it. He cried for a little while but stopped. He has no lose teeth and no bleeding and he talks fine. I m just concerned about his jaw!

Hello,

I can understand your concern. If the jaw was hurt, the child would have been in great pain and there would have been discrepancy in occlusion (when upper and lower teeth meet) on one or both sides.

However, injury at this age to chin should not be taken lightly and it may have hurt the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and may affect the jaw growth in future. So my advise to you is to visit an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for the clinical examination and x-ray of the TMJ and chin just to confirm that no bony injury has occured.

The area which is swelled now can be soothed and swelling can be reduced by application of ice.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your son feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
