Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello I have a 6 yr old little girl with no history of GI problems but has now for the past 8 days having intermittent severe abdominal pain and then either vomits or has diarrhea, I took her to ER last Friday she was admitted they checked everything. bloodwork was normal, xray showed no obstruction and ultrasound showed gallbladder was fine pancreas was good and appendix. They diagnosed Gastritis and sent her home. no fever.....but still having pain is this normal for a virus? 8 days?
Normally a gastroenteritis due to a virus is expected to settle within a week but sometimes giving another extra couple of days is advisable. it should not go beyond 10 days though.
Maybe sometimes when patients get gastroenteritis they may also develop some intolerance to milk for a few days so you might try to avoid milk (but she can use cheese and yogurt) for 2-3 days, make sure she eats and drinks frequent small amount of food or fluids and paracetmol can be tried for pain.
If there is no improvement or you notice any worsening then she will need to see a doctor again.
I hope this answers your query. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
