Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Pain Radiating Towards Back

My dad 58 years of age has pain in the abdomen region which goes till his back. He has been diagoned with pancreatitis. This problem started in april. He started with medication from 21st april, 2015. Since 35 years he has been taking alcohol daily and smoking. He quit alcohol on 21st april and smoking on 23rd may. We have got all his major tests done relating to pancreas. As per doctors there is swelling in pancreas and blockage (thrombus) in one vein close to pancreas going to the liver. Doctors say no surgery involved. But since april there is not much improvement in pain. He is taking his medications. Kindly suggest the needful to be done in this case. Regards

Hi,

Pancreatitis as you must be knowing by now is inflammation of pancreas. Pancreas is one of the organs in our abdomen that releases enzymes for digestion. There are many causes of pancreatitis like alcohol, gallstone, trauma, infections etc. Once it gets inflamed, sometimes it take time for it to recover. Pain is one of the most common symptoms for that.

Now, in your father's case since the pain is persisting, focus first of all on his diet. Take bland food as small frequent meals.Try to take more of liquids. Avoid eating fatty foods.Of course smoking and alcohol is to be completely stopped.

Besides, I feel that you should go for certain investigations to access the current condition and look for any secondary cause. You can go for routine blood investigations- complete blood count, amylase, lipase levels, liver functions tests. Even CT abdomen will be quite helpful. repeat investigations can help us make the appropriate diagnosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
