Suggest Treatment For Acid Reflux And Sore On The Roof Of The Mouth

The roof of my mouth(behind my 2 front teeth) continue to be sore and bleed occasionally. I am 49 years old, in relative good health. I have been to my primary, an ENT and my dentist. They all say it's irritation and nothing to worry about. I suffer from acid reflux, but I have been told to go see my ENT again and ask about sleep apenea. I was told I'm mouth breathing at night, and that could be drying out my mouth. Thoughts?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain acid reflux along with sore roof of mouth and pain seems to be due to inflammation and soreness of the mucosa only. In case if you are a mouth breather then it will further cause dryness and irritation of mucosa leading to soreness and bleeding. Acid reflux also causes irritation of the mucosa leading to inflammation, pain and bleeding. I would therefore suggest you to apply numbing gel containing Lignocaine over the sore area. If there is dry mouth chew sugar free chewing gums, drink plenty of water, avoid regular mouthwash and use specialized mouthwash that are formulated for dry mouth patients like Biotene.

You can also instil artificial saliva drops. Suck tart candies as it also stimulates saliva flow. For acid reflux you can be advised to take Proton Pump Inhibitors like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole. Take antacids like milk of magnesia, avoid spicy food and drink plenty of water. Always take walk after meals and take your dinner at least 2 hours before sleep. You should sleep with head slightly raised as compared to feet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
