Suggest Treatment For Adult Asperger S And Autism Issues

I m Looking for a Doctor that understands adult aspergers and autism issues. It seems that there are hundreds out here but I m fearful of someone who wants to overdope and keep stuck in neutral vs. moving forward. My son is the patient, I m the older mom wanting to see him move forward in a healthy way. It will take a Dr. that can reach a new millenium brilliant computer geek with an MS degree that has wonderful ideas but not really going anywhere. His stepdad and I are not getting through without argument.....just stuck in neutral. He s currently under another Dr. with medication...so I know we need a second opinion.

Hello,

Asperger syndrome is a term applied to a condition characterized by persistent impairment in social interactions and by repetitive behavior patterns and restricted interests.

Treatment of people with Asperger syndrome consists primarily of instruction and counseling, focusing on reinforcement of appropriate social behaviors, implementation of communication and language strategies, development of social skills, relaxation therapy, encouragement of special skills (eg, music or mathematics), and career counseling and orientation.

In addition, any comorbid conditions should be managed as appropriate, including depression, and behavioral disorders. Drugs to cure the core characteristics of Asperger syndrome have not yet been identified.

Pharmacologic interventions are used to treat comorbid disorders, including attention problems and mood disorders (eg, dysthymia, bipolar disorder), second-generation antipsychotics, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other psychiatric medications (eg, atomoxetine and guanfacine). You need a competent psychiatrist as well as a well communicating clinical psychologist or therapist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
