Suggest Treatment For Allergic Reaction On Penis And Scrotum

Hello. We are between insurances right now as I have just changed jobs. My son pulled up poison ivy this weekend, he s never been allergic, and now has it on his chest and his penis and scrotum. I called the Urgent Care clinic we always visit and asked the doctor to phone in a prescription but he declined and said just to use hydrocortizone to treat it with and it would go away in a few days if it was indeed poison ivy. ( I know that it is, I am allergic to it and have had it many times.) we ve used calamine, just started with the cream, benadryl spray. Anything short of a very expensive trip to the same urgent care clinic that wouldn t call in the prescription med I can do? Oh, my son is 18 years old.

Hi,

Poison ivy is an allergic reaction to the urushiol oil found in the leaves, stems, and roots of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. The symptoms of poison ivy include itching, redness, and blisters. If the rash has spread to your son's penis and scrotum, it may be very uncomfortable and require treatment. Here are some steps you can take to treat the rash:
- Clean the affected area: Use mild soap and lukewarm water to clean the affected area. Do not use hot water as it can make the rash worse.
- Apply hydrocortisone cream: You can apply hydrocortisone cream, which is available over the counter, to the affected area. It will help reduce itching, redness, and inflammation.
- Use cold compresses: Applying cold compresses can help relieve itching and inflammation. You can wrap a cold pack in a towel and apply it to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time.
- Take an antihistamine: Over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benadryl can help reduce itching and swelling.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing: Tight clothing can rub against the rash and cause further irritation. Wear loose-fitting soft, breathable fabric clothing.

If the rash is severe or does not improve after a few days, your son may need prescription medication. It is important to see a doctor if the rash spreads or if there are any signs of infection such as oozing, pus, or a fever. In the meantime, keep the affected area clean and avoid scratching the rash as it can lead to infection.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
