Suggest Treatment For Anxiety In A Person With Dementia

My mom suffers from dementia and is 84c. She has been given 1mg. To help with anxiety but after 2 weeks of constant screaming and crying all night and day we do not think it is sufficient to help her. The dr. Just today told us to withhold all day dozes and give her 2 mg. at bedtime. Is that sufficient? She cries and screams continually, please help us...

Hi,

I'm not sure what medication you are referring to as 1mg. Generally, Ativan or Clonazepam are used. Clonazepam has a longer half-life so has an advantage. A 2mg dose of either should help. These class of medications, benzodiazepines, can be used short-term but it has some drawbacks long-term.

These medications can be used short-term, but putting your mother on a daily SSRI may help. The problem is that it can take 4-6 weeks to fully kick in and even then, the dosage may need to be adjusted. Some other medications we use for sleep may help as well. Remeron, Trazodone, Guanfacine, and Doxepin can be used for sleep.
