Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 4 months pregnant, Ive suffered from anxiety for years. Before finding out I was pregnant I was taking Alprazolam, stopped for 2 months was able to control it but now i cant stand being around other people my anxiety is getting horrible. My question is can I continue with the medication?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Alprazolam is a Benzodiazepine drug and the drug is a good anti anxiety and sleep drug. The drug helps to control symptoms of anxiety. The drug has high abuse potential and it is known to cause dependence. In my opinion as you have stopped the drug so its not wise to start the drug again. If anxiety becomes intolerable or results in horrible symptoms then it can be used in low doses on SOS basis. Use of it on SOS basis wouldn't cause much effect on developing foetus. Consult your doctor and take the drug as per prescription only and don't self medicate yourself.
Avoid using the drug regularly as this would result in dependence to foetus and it may result in many complications to baby following delivery.
I went through your details. The medicine you are talking about is for anxiety disorder. Now you are pregnant. You must be under treatment of a gynecologist. Please understand you should not take any medicine without the consent or prescription of your gynecologist. Please consult your gynecologist. Secondly anxiety is supposed to be managed with the help of awareness, psychotherapy and meditation. Please understand, anxiety is body's defense mechanism for fear causing stimuli. Anxiety symptoms cannot harm your body or health.
